The Samuel W.T. Lanham Sons of Confederate Veteran Camp #586 of Weatherford, Texas is a non-profit organization which is a part of The Sons of Confederate Veterans international organization with camps all over the United States as well as in South America and Europe.  We are dedicated to the study and preservation of Southern and Confederate history, memorializing the Confederate Soldier, and preservation of cemeteries and monuments.  We also take the lead in requesting a Confederate grave marker from the Veteran’s Administration to be placed on the burial site of our heroic soldiers.  Another important mission of the SCV is service to our community.  If a camp observes that our neighbors or other civic groups need help or assistance with an event then the SCV is there to share in the task.

We are very often asked to present living history programs inschools as additional learning opportunities for children  Teachers and school administers operate on limited budgets and frequently look to community organizations to supplement the education experience for children.  The SCV is an important dimension in this process.  here

The SCV is the direct heir of the United Confederate Veterans, which was the organization to which the battle proven Confederate Veteran belonged.  The SCV is the oldest hereditary organization for male descendants of Confederate Soldiers.  Organized at Richmond, Virginia, in 1896, the SCV continues to serve as a historical, patriotic, and non-political organization dedicated to insuring that a true history of the 1861-1865 period is preserved.

Our staff genealogist can help you determine if you have a Confederate ancestor.  We have Broadfoot’s Roster of Confederate Soldiers.  If you can give us a name for which to search you can be on your way to membership. The Sons of Confederate Veterans is open to all male descendants of any veteran who served honorably in the Confederate armed forces.  Membership can be obtained through either direct or collateral family lines and kinship to a veteran must be documented genealogically.  The minimum age for membership is 12.

Proof of kinship to a Confederate soldier can take many forms.  The easiest method is to contact the archives of the state from which the soldier fought and obtain a copy of the veteran’s military service record.  All Southern states’ archives have microfilm records of the soldiers who fought from that state, and copy of the information can be obtained for a nominal fee.  In addition, the former Confederate States awarded pensions to veterans and their widows.  All of these contain a wealth of information that can be used to document military service.

Parker County Greys

If you can’t prove a genealogical link to a Confederate Soldier you can still enjoy the experience of membership.  The Parker County Grays was an organization of veterans that existed during the early part of the 1920’s.  The Parker County Greys will be our companion organization and as a members of the Greys you will have all of the fun of a regular camp member.  Anyone who has a genuine interest in the mission of the Sons of Confederate Veterans but cannot prove Confederate ancestry is welcome in the Greys.  Learn more. back
